Description

At Zenjibuji, Temple No. 32 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage overlooking Tosa Bay, the wooden Kongo Rikishi guardians Agyo and Ungyo stand in the Nio Gate. These forceful gatekeepers date to the Kamakura period and are traditionally attributed to the Buddhist sculptor Jomyo. They were designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan in 1911. Distinct from the temple's principal Eleven-faced Kannon, revered for safety at sea, the figures can be approached and viewed from the path. The rocky hilltop precinct adds to the setting.
