DescriptionEisho-ji, founded in 1636 by Eishō-in, a consort of Tokugawa Ieyasu, is Kamakura’s only surviving nunnery. Its Important Cultural Property Buddha Hall, completed around 1643, enshrines an Amida Triad. For generations, princesses of the Mito Tokugawa family served as abbesses, giving the temple a distinctive courtly and feminine history within samurai Kamakura. The triad’s promise of rebirth in the Pure Land, together with the bamboo grove and seasonal flowers, creates an atmosphere of quiet refinement and reassurance.
