Description

Zuiryuji Temple in Ozu, overlooking the Iyo Sea, preserves a nationally designated Important Cultural Property: a standing wooden Eleven-Faced Kannon from the Heian period. Carved from a single block of wood, the 163.6 cm figure has an elegantly elongated face and a proportionate, naturalistic body. Tradition holds that the statue was moved from Amidaji in Nagato to Seijoji after the fall of the Taira clan, and later enshrined here by Ozu lord Kato Yasutsune to pray for safety at sea. Normally kept from public view, the image is unveiled during the spring festival on the first Sunday in April; the 2026 festival took place on April 5. The temple still conducts Kannon rites for maritime safety and household well-being.
