Description

Two large wooden Kongo Rikishi guardians are enshrined in the Nio Gate at Taisanji, Temple No. 52 on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Approximately 270 cm tall, they were carved from split and rejoined conifer wood, possibly Japanese cypress. Stylistic analysis dates them to the late Heian period (12th century), predating the gate, which was built in the late Kamakura period. Their distinctive hair is shaved except for a topknot. Surviving Heian-period guardian figures of this kind are rare in Japan. The statues were designated Tangible Cultural Properties by Ehime Prefecture in 2024; the gate itself is a nationally designated Important Cultural Property. Visitors can view the figures from the temple approach.
