Description

At Jubuji, considered an inner sanctuary of Negoroji Temple, four wooden figures of the Heavenly Kings are designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Each is approximately one metre tall, constructed from joined cypress wood with inset crystal eyes. They are thought to date from the late Kamakura to Nanbokucho period, drawing on earlier sculptural styles. Their powerful armour and individual expressions are particularly compelling. Jikokuten, Zochoten, Komokuten and Tamonten stand in a row within a protective storehouse along the temple approach. Previous visitors who made reservations were able to worship them from the storehouse entrance, though the interior was not open for free entry. Contact the temple beforehand to arrange a viewing.
