Description

At Iyadaniji, Temple No. 71 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, a large image known as 'Kanabutsu-san' stands along the path before the flight of 108 stone steps. This roughly 6 m tall metal statue represents Kongoken Bodhisattva. According to temple tradition, casting began in the Genroku era (1688–1704) and took approximately twenty years. Kongoken is one of the Sixteen Great Bodhisattvas of the Diamond Realm in esoteric Buddhism; at Iyadaniji, the image is revered in prayers for recovery from illness and the fulfillment of wishes. Visitors can worship this unusual, monumental figure from the outdoor approach. The temple has long been a center of mountain worship, and its grounds involve extensive stone steps.
