Description

The seated wooden Enma Daio in the Enma Hall of Shidoji, Temple No. 86 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, dates to the Muromachi period. Made of joined wood and 142 cm tall, it represents the king who judges the dead. At this temple, Enma is regarded as a manifestation of the principal Eleven-Headed Kannon and uniquely wears a crown topped by a small Buddha figure and additional faces. He is flanked by Shimei (69 cm), who governs lifespan, and Shiroku (70 cm), who records good and bad deeds. The Edo-period Enma Hall building is a Tangible Cultural Property designated by Kagawa Prefecture. The hall opens for viewing on the 17th of each month, but some months may be canceled, so advance confirmation is necessary.
