Description

This enormous white Kannon statue rises above Shodoshima Island and is affectionately known as the 'Kannon of Happiness.' It was erected in 1995 with the support of parishioners of Koyasu Kannonji and pilgrims of the Shodoshima 88 Temple Pilgrimage, among others. The statue is reported to have received the Grand Prix in the ARC+ competition in France. Inside are approximately 14,000 small Buddhist images (tainaibutsu) and a principal image. At the top, Shakaden Hall enshrines a relic of the Buddha's tooth received from the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Sri Lanka. The hall's observation room offers views of the Seto Inland Sea and the island. Open year-round, 8:00–17:00, last entry 16:30; admission for adults is ¥500.
