Description

Takiji Temple in Miyoshi preserves a standing wooden Sho Kannon Bodhisattva as its principal image. Dating to the Heian period, the 126.0-centimeter-tall statue is carved from a single block of wood. It holds a lotus in its left hand and stands almost upright on a lotus pedestal. Its short neck, large topknot and angular shoulders retain an early sculptural style, while its face appears gentle. The statue was designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan in 1911. The temple is traditionally said to have been founded by Kobo Daishi in the ninth century and is also known for the tomb of Miyoshi Nagayoshi. The principal image is normally hidden, but Miyoshi City's official tourism guide states that it is unveiled on January 29 each year, when worshippers may see it. Parking is available.
