Description

In front of the main hall at Yakuoji, Temple No. 23 on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, stands a bronze statue of Gyoran Kannon. Unlike more familiar depictions of Kannon, it portrays a woman holding a basket filled with fish, shrimp and other seafood. This unusual form of the bodhisattva derives from a Tang-dynasty Chinese legend in which Kannon, disguised as a young fish seller, taught Buddhism to the people. The statue was donated by the Osaka City Central Wholesale Market and is revered by people in the fishing and market trades, who pray for abundant catches, safety at sea and business prosperity. It is a distinctive image at Yakuoji, a seaside temple known for prayers against misfortune, and visitors can see it up close outdoors.
