Description

A pair of Kongo Rikishi guardians, Agyo and Ungyo, stands in the brightly vermilion-painted Niomon Gate of Idoji, Temple No. 17 on the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. Tokushima Prefecture's official tourism guide identifies them as Kamakura-period statues approximately one jo two shaku (about 3.6 meters) tall, making them among the largest guardian figures on the pilgrimage. They guard the gate with fierce expressions and imposing bodies, while large straw sandals are offered behind them. The warrior-style gate traces its origins to the gate of the Hachisuka lords' Otani residence; the present structure was reconstructed in that style. Visitors can view the impressive guardians at the entrance. Separately, the main hall enshrines an unusual principal image of seven Yakushi Nyorai statues.
