DescriptionJoren-an stands at a mountain pass about 730 meters above sea level on the steep pilgrimage route from Fujii-dera, Temple No. 11, to Shosanji, Temple No. 12, of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. The approximately 3-meter-tall bronze standing statue of Kobo Daishi, also called the Smiling Daishi, was donated along with 42 stone steps in 1926 by Kawachi Ikutaro of Kyoto. Behind it rises the giant Sochi Ipponsugi cedar, approximately 30 meters tall and 8 meters in trunk circumference, which is designated a Natural Monument of Tokushima Prefecture. Tradition holds that Kobo Daishi dreamed of Amida Nyorai here, enshrined an image and planted the cedar. Visitors can freely worship the outdoor statue; parking and toilets are provided.
