Description

About 200 wooden rakan (arhat) statues are displayed in the inner sanctuary of Jizoji, Temple No. 5 of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage. The hall was founded in 1775 by the monk brothers Jitsubun and Jitsumyo, but many statues were lost in a fire in 1915; the present building dates to 1922. Corridors connect the central Shaka Hall with the Miroku and Daishi halls, allowing visitors to view life-size arhats at close range, each showing different human emotions and expressions. The Five Hundred Rakan Hall building is a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan.
