Description

Godaidō stands on a small islet in Matsushima Bay and houses the hidden images of the Five Great Wisdom Kings, traditionally attributed to the monk Ennin. The present hall was rebuilt by Date Masamune in 1604, and its setting above the sea makes it a powerful meeting place of landscape and faith. The images are unveiled only once every thirty-three years, with the next public viewing scheduled for 2039. Even when the doors remain closed, the compact hall conveys the stern protective force and mystery of the Wisdom Kings.
