Description

A group of stone figures representing the Shaka Triad and Sixteen Arhats stands in the grounds of Taineiji, a historic Soto Zen temple near Nagato Yumoto Onsen. The triad consists of Shaka Nyorai accompanied by his two disciples Kasho and Anan, together with sixteen arhats entrusted with preserving Buddhist teachings. The statues are thought to date to the early Edo period, around 1677, and the names of donors are carved on their backs. They originally stood at Sansho-iwa on the opposite bank of the Taineiji River. Following road construction and concerns about erosion and rockfall, the group was moved and installed at its current location in May 2005. Visitors can worship this expressive ensemble of stone images outdoors. A separate set of wooden Sixteen Arhats is kept in the inner sanctuary of the Main Hall.
