DescriptionA wooden seated Dainichi Nyorai, a nationally designated Important Cultural Property, is preserved in Ryuzoji's treasure house. Believed to date to the 12th century in the late Heian period, it measures 98.8 cm in height. Carved from a single block of cypress wood, the statue wears a jeweled crown and represents the Dainichi Nyorai of the Womb Realm, with both hands overlapping on the lap in the hokkai-join meditation mudra. Its full face, substantial chest and arms, and well-balanced form display the gentle sculptural style of the Heian period. Originally the principal image of Myohoji in the Kizaki area of Yoshiki, Yamaguchi, it was moved to Ryuzoji during temple reorganizations in the Meiji period. It is now kept in the treasure house, which may remain closed depending on the weather, so visitors should confirm access to the statue in advance.
