Description

The wooden standing Thousand-Armed Kannon Bosatsu is enshrined in Kannon Hall at Gankiji. The temple is traditionally said to have been founded in 806. The temple preserves seven Buddhist statues dating from the middle Heian to early Kamakura periods. The Thousand-Armed Kannon is one of this group of images designated Tangible Cultural Properties by Yamaguchi Prefecture. It is unveiled only on 18 February each year, together with seated Shaka and Amida Nyorai statues. Although it is not normally viewable, the annual opening offers a rare chance to worship this historic wooden image directly.
