Description

The wooden seated Amida Nyorai at Saichoji is affectionately known as the Himi Great Buddha on Suo-Oshima Island. Believed to date to the late Heian period, around the 12th century, the imposing statue is 284 cm high. Made of joined cypress wood with a lacquer-and-gold finish, it has a dignified expression and broad proportions. Its original halo and pedestal also survive. Designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan, it can be viewed inside the hall on weekends and public holidays according to the temple, or through a window from outside.
