DescriptionShomokuji Temple preserves a pair of wood-core dry-lacquer standing Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu. Both date to the early Heian period in the 9th century and stand 88 cm tall. Each is carved from a single wooden core, covered with cloth, and finished with layers of lacquer in the mokushin kanshitsu technique. Although the surface finish has largely flaked away, both are said to have originally been gilded. As a rare pair preserving the style of early Heian Buddhist sculpture, both are designated Important Cultural Properties of Hiroshima Prefecture. They are normally closed to the public but may be viewed by contacting the temple in advance.
