Description

This wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon is enshrined in the main hall of Jizoin Temple. A joined-wood sculpture from the Muromachi period, it stands 145.7 cm tall. Its lips are slightly parted to reveal four upper teeth, and crystal eyes are set into the face. Its faintly smiling expression is exceptionally rare for a Kannon image. One foot steps forward as if the bodhisattva were setting out to save those in distress. Known as Kongo Kenshi Kannon, it is venerated for dental health and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Hiroshima Prefecture. Jizoin is open at all times with no closing days and no admission fee.
