Description

The massive granite Hachijo-iwa Rock near the summit of Mt. Shirataki behind Ryusenji Temple bears a group of cliff-carved Buddhist images. The south face features a Shaka triad centered on Shaka Nyorai, while the northern faces include images associated with Xuanzang and the Sixteen Protective Deities. In total, nineteen figures are carved in relief. Believed to date from the early Edo period, the group is a rare example of the Sixteen Protective Deities represented in stone. Ryusenji and Mt. Shirataki are freely accessible, so the carvings can be viewed outdoors at any time.
