DescriptionThis wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon Bosatsu is the principal image of Fumeikaku Hall at Saihoji Temple. Thought to date from the Muromachi period, it is made in joined-wood construction with crystal-inlaid eyes and measures 82 cm in height, or about 95 cm including its pedestal and halo. Its refined face and delicate drapery show the influence of Chinese Song-dynasty style, while the halo uses pierced brass ornament. Exceptionally well preserved, the statue was designated an Important Cultural Property of Hiroshima Prefecture in 1962. It is enshrined in Fumeikaku, a stage-style hall modeled on Kyoto's Kiyomizudera, and can be viewed during visiting hours.
