Description

Two wooden Kongo Rikishi statues stand in Saikokuji Temple’s Niomon Gate. The pair consists of Agyo and Ungyo, and the Onomichi tourism association dates them to the late Muromachi period. More than two-meter-long giant straw sandals are dedicated at the gate so worshippers can pray for strong legs by invoking the power of the Kongo Rikishi, a tradition that continues today. The statues can be seen directly from the temple’s main approach and are among Saikokuji’s most distinctive Buddhist images.
