DescriptionThe principal ensemble at Gionji consists of a standing Thousand-Armed Kannon and two attendant figures, designated Important Cultural Properties by Takahashi City. The central Kannon is a 170 cm joined-wood figure with 42 arms—two central hands and 20 on each side—symbolically representing a thousand arms. An inscription on the soles records repairs in 1555, while the gentle face and drapery retain the character of late Heian sculpture. Fudo Myoo and Bishamonten flank the Kannon, forming a tightly unified triad. Normally kept hidden, the images are unveiled once a year around the summer festival; in 2026 the unveiling took place on August 22.
