Description

Shomen Kongo is a hidden deity enshrined in the Gooshoden Hall of Saidaiji Kannon-in. Revered in Koshin belief as a protector against epidemics, the figure has a blue-green body and six arms holding implements such as a bow, arrows, and sword. One hand grasps a nearly naked female figure called Shokera, symbolizing the Three Corpses of Daoist belief. With hair standing on end, snakes coiled around the body, and demons trampled beneath the feet, the image has an extraordinary and highly charged presence. Normally hidden from view, it is unveiled free of charge every year from January 1 to 14.
