DescriptionThis wooden standing Eleven-Faced Kannon at Goryu Sonryuin is designated an Important Cultural Property by Okayama Prefecture. Constructed from several joined pieces of wood, the figure has a somewhat rigid upright stance that gives it a rustic and restrained character. It is believed to date from the Kamakura period or later and to have been made by a local sculptor. The image represents the Buddhist sculptural heritage of Goryu Sonryuin, a historic center of Shugendo. The temple is open from 9:00 to 17:00 with no regular closing days, and the statue is introduced as one of the highlights for visitors.
