Description

Two Nio guardian statues are enshrined in the rear chambers of Houtouji Temple's Nio Gate. Houtouji is an ancient temple traditionally founded in 859, and the gate is thought to date from the middle Muromachi period and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Kurashiki City. Although much of the temple was destroyed by fire in the Keicho era, the gate and its Nio statues are said to have survived. Visitors can view the powerful, dignified figures up close through the gate lattice.
