Description

The Guardian Great Buddha stands on the grounds of Tanjoji beside the Kannon Hall. After the Mieido Hall was destroyed in 1578 during an attack by the forces of Ukita Naoie, the statue was consecrated in 1745 as a guardian Buddha to pray that such calamity would never occur again. It was made by Otani Sagami-no-jo Fujiwara Masatsugu, renowned as a master bell caster. The statue remains accessible for worship on the temple grounds and embodies Tanjoji's history of warfare and reconstruction.
