Description

A pair of wooden Kongo Rikishi statues is enshrined in the Nio Gate and designated an Important Cultural Property of Okayama Prefecture. Made in joined-block construction, the Agyo figure is 207.0 cm tall and the Ungyo figure 205.2 cm. Although no ink inscription or similar record survives, the pair is regarded as a Kamakura-period work that faithfully carries on the Kei-school style, with powerful physiques and refined sculptural expression. Okayama Prefecture lists the statues as freely viewable, allowing visitors to worship them on the temple grounds.
