Description

This wooden standing Kannon Bosatsu dates back to the 9th century and is designated an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Carved from a single block of wood, the figure has a full, substantial body and finely carved drapery and ornaments, creating a dignified presence. It is thought that part of the original pedestal beneath the feet was also carved from the same block. Myooji is traditionally counted among the Forty-Eight Temples of Bizen and is said to have been founded by the monk Hoon Daishi in the Nara period. Viewing is available by prior arrangement.
