Description

The principal wooden Sho Kannon and its attendant wooden Taishakuten are both designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Iwakuraji is an ancient Shingon Buddhist temple traditionally founded in 726. It originally stood in Yamasa and is said to have been moved to its present site at the foot of Gassan Toda Castle by the priest Koken in 1187. A local tradition tells that Kannon appeared in the abbot's dream and instructed him to move the image to Toda. The temple is the 18th site of the Izumo Kannon Pilgrimage, and visitors are asked to contact the temple in advance.
