DescriptionThe wooden standing Komokuten and Tamonten, enshrined as attendants to the principal image in the Main Hall, are both designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. The two guardian deities wear vividly colored armor and are introduced in official tourism information as works of the Kamakura period. Joanji is an old Rinzai Zen temple founded during the Showa era of 1312–1317 and rebuilt at its present location in 1903. Together with the garden known as a Sesshu-style copy, the two statues are among the temple's principal highlights.
