Description

The stone Fudo Myoo standing on a cliff midway along the temple approach is about 9 meters high and is regarded as the largest cliff-carved Buddhist image in Shimane Prefecture. Because Mount Makuragi lies in the northeast, traditionally considered the unlucky direction of Matsue Castle, the statue is said to have been erected by the monk Shoan during the Keio era to pray for national protection and the castle's security. Kezoji is an ancient temple traditionally founded by the monk Chigen in 825, and the Fudo image remains a prominent object of worship along its approach.
