Description

The principal Yakushi Nyorai is traditionally attributed to the Kamakura-period 'Annami' tradition and is enshrined with attendant Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu. The triad preserves delicate coloring applied over gold leaf. Ikoji developed from a subtemple of Sukanji, founded in 1363, and was later reestablished by Munekane, the 17th head of the Masuda clan. The garden, traditionally said to have been created while Sesshu served as abbot of Sukanji, is designated a National Historic Site and Place of Scenic Beauty. Viewing hours are 8:30–17:30 from March through November and 8:30–17:00 from December through February.
