DescriptionEngaku-ji’s Butsuden, rebuilt in 1964 after the Great Kantō Earthquake, enshrines the temple’s principal image, the Crowned Shakyamuni Buddha. Because of its jeweled crown, the image is also revered as Vairocana Buddha in the Kegon tradition, symbolizing a universe illuminated by wisdom and compassion. The hall stands at the center of the Zen monastic compound and hosts daily dawn meditation and major ceremonies. Overhead, the White Dragon was painted by Moriya Tadashi under the supervision of Maeda Seison, adding dynamic energy to the otherwise composed and dignified space.
