DescriptionKencho-ji’s Buddha Hall enshrines a towering seated Jizo Bosatsu (Kṣitigarbha), the temple’s principal deity, surrounded by a multitude of smaller Jizo images. Before Kencho-ji was founded, this valley was known as Jigokudani, or Hell Valley, and a hall dedicated to Jizo already stood here. Within the first-ranked temple of the Kamakura Gozan, the compassionate bodhisattva who saves beings from suffering gives the formal Zen space a profound sense of mercy, memory, and protection.
