Description

A 5.5-meter stone standing Jizo Bosatsu rises in front of Sairenji’s main hall. It was erected in 1757 to memorialize more than seventy people who died during an epidemic in Hashizu, many of them children. The local Chomachi dance is still offered during Jizo Bon on August 23, preserving the community’s devotion. Because the statue stands outdoors, visitors can normally see and worship it throughout the year.
