Description

Gakugyoin enshrines a wooden seated Yakushi Nyorai with two attendant bodhisattvas and a wooden standing Kisshoten, all designated Important Cultural Properties of Japan. Temple tradition says Koryoji was established here in the Wado era and that these images survived the warfare of the Sengoku period. The principal Yakushi Nyorai was traditionally regarded as a sacred image whose face could be viewed only at an unveiling once every twelve years.
