Description

Ennō-ji’s main hall presents the Buddhist world of posthumous judgment through the Ten Kings, centered on an Important Cultural Property seated image of King Enma made in 1251. The kings are believed to examine the conduct of the dead at successive intervals and determine the course of rebirth. Rather than serving merely as frightening images, the stern figures function as a mirror for reflecting on one’s actions while still alive. Their concentrated expressions and the hall’s underworld atmosphere make this one of Kamakura’s most memorable encounters with Buddhist moral teaching.
