DescriptionKakuon-ji’s Yakushi Hall is the spiritual center of the temple. At the center sits Yakushi Nyorai (the Medicine Buddha), flanked by Nikkō and Gakkō Bodhisattvas, who symbolize the light of day and night. Beyond them stand the Twelve Divine Generals, each bearing an animal of the zodiac on the head and guarding the Yakushi Triad. The present hall is based on a reconstruction of 1354 and has been repeatedly repaired. In the secluded Kamakura valley, the dark, thatched interior preserves the powerful intimacy of medieval healing devotion.
