Description

An old temple near the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi route, with its main hall integrated into a huge rock cavern. The principal image is Bato Kannon. Temple tradition links the name Sukuma Kannon to Oguri Hangan, whose horse was said to have been saved here in 1426. The principal image is secret and is unveiled only once every 12 years, on the first Horse Day of the lunar calendar in a Year of the Horse. The main hall itself is normally open to worshippers.
