DescriptionSugimoto-dera, traditionally regarded as Kamakura’s oldest temple, was founded in 734 and enshrines three hidden images of Jūichimen Kannon (Eleven-Headed Kannon) as its principal deities. They are traditionally attributed to Gyōki, Ennin, and Genshin, and two are designated Important Cultural Properties. A front-facing Kannon donated by Minamoto no Yoritomo stands before them, together with Jizo, Fudō Myōō, and other sacred figures. The thatched hall and moss-covered approach preserve a humble, intimate Kannon devotion layered through more than twelve centuries.
