DescriptionKoshoji Temple in Uji enshrines this Uji City-designated wooden standing Sho Kannon in Shido-den Hall. Dating to the mid-Heian period, the single-block wooden image stands 166.7 cm tall. Temple tradition attributes it to Ono no Takamura, and it is known as the “Tenarai Kannon” because it was once worshipped at a Kannon hall associated with the Tenarai chapter of The Tale of Genji’s Uji chapters. Its full-sized, weighty form and quiet expression are especially striking. The temple explains that the slightly raised right big toe symbolizes readiness to hurry to those in distress. The hall is normally accessible during visiting hours.
