Description

Byodoin Museum Hoshokan displays 26 of the 52 National Treasure Unchu Kuyo Bosatsu, the celestial worshipping bodhisattvas that adorn the Pure Land imagery of the Phoenix Hall. The complete group is a uniquely preserved ensemble of eleventh-century Buddhist sculpture. Each figure rides a cloud and appears in a different pose—playing music, dancing, praying or making offerings—creating an extraordinarily lively vision of Amida’s paradise. Seen at close range in the museum, details that are difficult to appreciate high inside the Phoenix Hall become clearly visible.
