Description

Seiryoji’s Treasure Hall preserves an Important Cultural Property group of ten wooden statues representing Shakyamuni’s great disciples, made in the Heian period. Originally arranged around the temple’s principal standing Shaka Nyorai, figures such as Purna and Rahula are portrayed with unusually individual, lively expressions. Their strongly human faces and distinct personalities differ from the idealized calm of many Buddha and Bodhisattva images, revealing the expressive breadth of Heian Buddhist sculpture. The group is scheduled to be on view from October 1 through November 30, 2026.
