Description

Koryuji’s Treasure Hall displays the National Treasure set of twelve wooden Heavenly Generals, dated to 1064 and traditionally attributed to the sculptor Chosei. These guardian figures of Yakushi Nyorai appear as armed warriors, each with a distinct stance and expression while retaining the composed character of late-Heian sculpture. Displayed year-round alongside Koryuji’s celebrated Buddhist sculptures, the complete group offers an unusually direct encounter with a major Heian guardian ensemble.
