Description

Zenjoji’s Treasure Hall preserves standing figures of Nikko and Gakko Bosatsu, both designated Important Cultural Properties. Nikko is about 203 cm high and Gakko about 208 cm, both large polychrome sculptures carved principally from single blocks of wood. They are considered roughly contemporary with the temple’s late-10th-century principal Eleven-Faced Kannon and convey the powerful mass of early Buddhist sculpture in southern Yamashiro. The pair can be viewed together during regular Treasure Hall hours.
