Description

Inside Manpukuji’s National Treasure Daiyuhoden stands a celebrated image of Rahula among the Eighteen Arhats. Manpukuji preserves the Ming-dynasty temple format of eighteen arhats, adding Qingyou and Pindola to the traditional sixteen. Rahula is especially famous for the extraordinary gesture of pulling open his chest with both hands to reveal the face of a Buddha within. The image vividly embodies the Chinese Buddhist culture transmitted by the Obaku school and can be viewed during regular temple hours.
