Description

Horinji, known as Daruma-dera in Kyoto’s Enmachi area, preserves a life-sized gilt wooden reclining Shaka from the Muromachi period. Temple tradition says the image was offered at Gayain in Hyogo to pray for soldiers and villagers who died during Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s attack on Miki Castle, and it was later brought to Horinji when the temple was founded in the Edo period. A three-dimensional wooden reclining Buddha of this scale is unusual in Kyoto, and the golden Nirvana image can be viewed during regular temple hours.
