Description

Along Kasagidera’s ascetic circuit, an image of Kokuzo Bosatsu is carved into a massive granite rock. The carving is thought to date from around the late Nara period. Unlike the temple’s principal Miroku cliff image, whose figure was largely lost in medieval warfare, the lines of this Kokuzo image remain clearly visible. It offers a rare direct encounter with the ancient mountain faith of Kasagiyama, where the natural boulder itself became an object of Buddhist devotion. The carving can be seen on the temple’s regular circuit.
